South West Scooter Clubs is your British host for the 2013 Cocoa Beach Scooter Rally. Representatives from several US Clubs are your American hosts. Shoot us an email
here.
Why a rally in February?
The British scooterist contingent really wanted to come back and do a joint rally in the US, like they had been doing since 2003, but wanted to go somewhere different than Las Vegas.
Any joint rally has to be outside the usual UK rally season, which means that a warm place within the US had to be found. We thought of Florida
and
after checking out the possible venues we chose Cocoa Beach, Florida. The first Cocoa Beach rally was in 2011 and we had around 570 attendees from America, Britain, Canada, Australia, France and Germany.
What can I expect when I get to the rally?
The main organisers and most of the clubs involved in running the rally are old school scooterists, have been going to rallies and organising them for around 20 years or more. Old school means we follow the British rally formula.
The Cocoa Beach rally has a very loose and open schedule that allows for plenty of socialising with friends you haven't seen in a while and doing your own thing. The main organised events are in the ballroom on the Friday and Saturday evenings.
If you are more used to the modern rallies that have events going on every minute of the day, this rally might not be for you. We'll have rides, vendors, a scooter show and club games during the day, but lots of time to do your own thing too. We imagine people
meeting new friends, chilling with a cold drink in hand and having fun by the pool in great weather.
Why Cocoa Beach and this hotel in particular?
We considered and visited a fair few different towns. Cocoa Beach won because of its chilled out beach feel and because, compared to some beach towns in Florida, the prices are pretty reasonable. We stayed at a few different hotels. It had to be a hotel with a ballroom big enough to hold all our attendees,
with the right vibe, near enough the beach, with decent prices for rooms,a nd at the bar. Most of all, we had to
feel like we were wanted as guests. The Comfort Inn owners and staff made us feel really welcome and worked with us to make everything perfect and the hotel surroundings premises were what we imagines when we started on our search.
Why do all the people from overseas come when they don't have a scooter?
Like I said earlier, the formula for the rally is based on British scooter rallies, where you ride to the rally, park the scooter for the weekend, socialise with friends and then ride your scooter home. Its not practical to ship a scooter from overseas, so they come to hang out with scooter people from around
the world and meet new scooterists. Make sure you head into the Lagoon Lounge at some point over the weekend, or grab a drink in a "to go" cup and head to the pool. Start talking to that person next to you that you've never met before. You could make a lifetime friend!!
Do you have a theme this year?
Yes. Its a tiki theme. Break out your grass skirts and leis and get into the swing of the rally
Will there be a raffle?
There will be a raffle, but this year it will be held on Saturday early evening, poolside. The main prize will be a scooter. Awards and club games will be by the pool on Sunday.
What are the award categories?
We're still coming up with final categories but it will be pretty much the same as 2011, with the usual vintage and modern awards as well as furthest ridden and furthest travelled. We're thinking about adding a best dressed in the tiki theme.
Why is the rally only once every 2 years?
The rally is a lot of work to put on and many people travel long distances to get there. We don't want us, the organisers getting burnt out doing the work every year, or the attendees getting burnt out on travelling the long distances every year. So we put it on once every 2 years, or biennially.
Is there camping in the area?
Not actually in Cocoa Beach, but closeby. You can find details
here. We cannot organise this for you and we also cannot have you park your RV in the parking lot and run a power line out of a hotel room window!!
Who designed the rally logo?
This year we were incredibly fortunate to have Mr Ronnie Younts, from Charm City, agree to design the logo. He is an incredibly talented man and all the organisers would like to express our gratitude to Ronnie and our absolute awe at his talent. If you see him at a rally, shake his hand.
Thank you Ronnie.
